2019 Healthcare That Works For All
In order to stimulate the health policy community with a clear picture of what successful healthcare reform will look like, IAF offers 2019 Healthcare That Works For All. This series of papers describes how different aspects of healthcare can improve through a ten year change process. We invite readers to challenge this view of the preferred future for healthcare by thinking about what might be even better. Click here to visit the overview page and read the papers.
Complementary and Alternative Approaches in U.S. Health Care
Studies have shown that between 33 and 69 percent of Americans use some form of alternative therapy, most often paying "out of pocket" for the care. IAF produced two major reports. One, The Future of Complementary and Alternative Approaches (CAAs) in U.S. Health Care, examines a wide range of trends bringing about major changes in health and health care and then considers the future of three different CAAs: chiropractic, Oriental medicine, and homeopathy. The second, The Future of Chiropractic: Optimizing Health Gains, covers similar territory but focuses on the chiropractic profession. Made possible by a grant from the National Chiropractic Mutual Insurance Company and administered by the Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER), the reports include IAF's recommendations for health care systems, policymakers, and health care professionals (both conventional and alternative).
Guidebook for Nurse Futurists
IAF prepared this futures guidebook for the International Council of Nurses’ (ICN) 100th anniversary. The Guidebook contains ICN’s Vision for the Future of Nursing and a wealth of information on trends affecting the profession, as well as instructions for conducting participatory strategic thinking exercises. A Letter from the Future on Knowledge Tech in Health
IAF Senior Fellow Bill Rowley, MD found this letter from a doctor practicing in the year 2020, who describes how knowledge technology has transformed healthcare delivery. Click here to read the letter.
Picker Institute Scenarios on Patient-Centered Care 2015
The Picker Institute, a leader in measuring the nature and quality of patient-centered care, commissioned the IAF to help create a shared vision for the future of patient-centered care. Click here for the PDF report.
Scenarios for Exploring America’s Healthcare Values
These three scenarios for the year 2025 focus on a couple fundamental values for the healthcare system while leaving other desires unchanged. The result is a system with some aspects working, but glaring deficiencies in other areas. They illustrate consequences and stimulate discussion about which values need to be included to achieve desired outcomes. Following the presentation of each scenario there is discussion to give participants insight about the influence of values and the unintended consequences if they are not carefully chosen by society. Click here for the report.
The Future of Chiropractic Revisited: 2005 to 2015
IAF revisited an earlier report on the future of chiropractic care in the U.S. During the process, IAF interviewed over 50 experts on chiropractic and related fields, attended the Florida Chiropractic Association annual meeting, and experienced chiropractic care first hand. Imaging 2029 - Looking to the Future
Jonathan Peck’s address at the 2006 American Roentgen Ray Society annual conference in Vancouver served as the distinguished Caldwell Lecture. He has written an article for the Society’s journal based upon this lecture. Click here (page 20) to read it and here to listen to a recording of his lecture.
Institutional Change in Healthcare
This article, written in 2004 by IAF president and senior futurist Jonathan Peck, highlights the psychological crisis that has yet to be explicitly addressed by our healthcare reform debate, and that may lie beneath concerns over alleged “death panels.” Institutional Change in Health Care was published in the On the Horizon journal.
